A Few Recent Films:Nutshells
Here are a few recent and excellent (2014-2015) films you may not have heard about by genre.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
Very stylish B&W with a 50’s James Dean/beatnik vibe. An Iranian (filmed in California) hipster vamp that preys primarily on men that mistreat women. Directed and written by Ana Lily Amipour.
Claire is under the influence of a strange cult. This is written and directed by newcomer Riley Stearns. There is a Cohen brothers feel, dark humor and creepy. Leland Orser, similar to William H Macy, is just fantastic.
Force Majeure (2014) English subs
A critical favorite and word-of-mouth sensation at 2014’s Cannes Festival, where it took the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard, this wickedly funny and precisely observed psychodrama tells the story of a model Swedish family on a skiing vacation (gorgeously filmed) and they experience an “avalanche”.
Arnold Schwarzenegger in a zombie film? It’s not what you think. At a slow, methodical, and creepy pace, a tired and sad father (without trying to be Rick Grimes) and no overacting finds out his daughter was bitten. In this version, the infection takes a while (14 days to turn) which results in some gut-wrenching storytelling.
The Babadook (2014)
This one is really excellent. A very talented debut of Australian writer/director Jennifer Kent, makes for one of the better horror movies of recent times. Essie Davis is great. The artwork is very cool.
